In 2004, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance
launched National Cyber Security Awareness Month as a broad effort to help Americans stay safe and secure online. Initially, advice was put out like keeping antivirus programs up to date. Since ‘09, the month has included an overall theme, and in ‘11 weekly themes began. This year the theme for the month is:
“Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.”
This encourages individuals and organizations to own their role in protecting their slice of
cyberspace, stressing personal accountability and the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity.
This year the weekly themes are as follows:
• You Connect It, Protect It
• Securing Devices at Home and Work
• Securing Internet-Connected Devices in Healthcare
• The Future of Connected Devices
