Client Spotlight October 2026

Some Helena businesses have been here for a long time. Smith Law Firm has been serving the community since before Montana became a state.

The firm started in 1871, when Massena Bullard began practicing law in Montana Territory. J. Miller Smith Sr. joined in 1892, and after Bullard retired in 1900, the practice became known as Smith Law Firm. The Smith family continued the tradition, and now attorneys R. J. “Jim” Sewell Jr., Craig D. Charlton, and Scott H. Clement lead the firm. That’s more than 150 years of serving Helena.

Smith Law Firm helps businesses handle their legal needs. Their main services are:

  • Business formation: helping owners set up their companies in Montana to protect themselves from liability and get tax benefits.
  • Creditor rights: managing collections so clients can get what they’re owed while avoiding legal trouble.
  • Auto dealer services: helping dealerships with warranty disputes, government rules, and consumer lease agreements. This industry faces more legal challenges than many others.

Their approach is straightforward: you focus on your business, and they handle the legal work. The firm relies on stability, high standards, and experienced people to do the job right from the start.

The team is homegrown, too. Jim Sewell was born in Deer Lodge and has practiced since 1971. Craig Charlton grew up in Helena and graduated from Capital High, and Scott Clement is a Montana native who has called Helena home since 2005.

At ISM, we’re proud to support a firm that has earned Montana’s trust for so many years. We also understand the value of lasting relationships.
